The 7 SAT Math Mistakes That Cost the Most Points
When we tag missed Math questions by cause, the same seven patterns account for the large majority of lost points — and almost none of them are 'I didn't know the maths'.
1. Answering a different question than the one asked
The question asks for the value of 3x, you solve for x and pick it from the answer choices — where it has been placed on purpose. Fix: underline the exact quantity asked for before you start solving, and check it against your answer at the end.
2. Ignoring the Desmos calculator
Systems of equations, quadratic roots, intersections, inequalities and 'for which value of k does this have no solution' questions are all faster graphed than solved. Fix: for every practice question, ask whether graphing beats algebra before you write anything down.
3. Sinking three minutes into one question
Your average budget is about 1 minute 35 seconds. Spending four minutes on one question can cost you two easier questions later. Fix: practise a hard 2x rule — at double the budget you flag it, pick your best guess and move on.
4. Misreading units and rates
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis questions convert between per-hour and per-minute, dollars and cents, or grams and kilograms. Fix: write the unit next to every number you copy down. It takes two seconds and eliminates a whole error class.
5. Not plugging in on abstract questions
When the answer choices are expressions in variables, picking concrete numbers is often faster and safer than manipulating symbols. Fix: choose small, non-special numbers (avoid 0 and 1), evaluate the question, then test each choice.
6. Sloppy transcription
A minus sign lost between the screen and the scratch paper is the single most common careless error we see. Fix: copy the whole expression in one pass, then re-read it against the screen before solving.
7. Reviewing by reading explanations
Reading a solution feels productive and teaches almost nothing. Fix: before opening the explanation, write one sentence about why your approach failed. Then redo the question from scratch a day later.
Keep an error log with four columns: question, sub-skill, error type, one-line fix. Reviewing that log for ten minutes a week beats an extra hour of new questions.
